Information systems” are more complex and can best be understood by looking at them from both a technology and a business perspective.
“An information system (IS) can be defined technically as a set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization. In addition to supporting decision making, coordination, and control, information systems also help managers and workers analyse problems, visualise complex subjects, and create new products.”
“Information systems can be designed to assist managers directly in planning and decision making by combining management science, statistics, computer science, and market data into an integrated decision information system.” (Montgomery & Urban, 1970).
IS are combinations of hardware, software, and telecommunications networks which people build and use to collect, create, and distribute useful data, typically in organizational settings ( Jessup & Valacich, 2001 )
Good information is a facilitator of successful marketing action, and indeed seen in the light, marketing management becomes first and foremost an information processing activity (Christopher et al., 1980)
Without Information, the firm of the 21st century will find it more difficult to grow or even survive in an environment that is getting fiercer and fiercer.
Decision makers, to make good decisions, must have relevant information readily available for their use (Bhamhra & Chaudhary, 2002).
